International Flights

Directions from SJO to El Castillo – 3½ hour drive to El Castillo, with the most flight options available to and from major countries:

There are two main routes from San José International Airport, but we recommend the new toll highway (Hwy 27) and coastal road (Hwy 34) route, which takes 3½ to 4 hours from San José.

Travel on Route 1 beside the airport toward San José for approximately 11 kilometers/6.8 miles.

Exit to Route 39 toward Hatillo/Escazu for about 2 kilometers/1.2 miles.

Exit Route 27 toward Escazu/Orotina/Jaco. (There is a quicker way to Route 27 if you are familiar and comfortable with Costa Rican roads or have GPS/Waze navigation.) Route 27 is a toll road, so it is best to have about 2,000 colones with you.

After 58 kilometers/36 miles on Route 27, exit Route 34 toward Jaco. You are now on the Costanera highway.

Travel approximately 170 kilometers/105.6 miles to our exit. You will pass through Dominical and Uvita and see the sign to enter Ojochal.

Pass this left and continue on the Costanera highway over a bridge and take the next left. You will see painted wooden signs for El Castillo, Azul, and Alma.

Turn left at the signs. (If you pass Restaurante Boca Coronado on your right, you missed it.)

You will come 300 meters/330 yards up the road and see a set of black wrought iron gates. There are signs beside the drive.

Head up the drive and you have arrived… and that calls for a cocktail!

From Quepos La Managua Airport you will drive south (left) leaving the airport.

Drive 71 kilometers/44 miles to the south. You will pass through Dominical and Uvita and see the sign to enter Ojochal.

Take the next left. You will see painted wooden signs for El Castillo, Azul, and Alma.

In 300 meters/330 yards, you will see a set of black wrought iron gates.

Drive north on the Costanera highway from Palmar Sur Airport.

You will drive approximately 30 kilometers/18.6 miles and see signs for Ojochal.

Driving

You can reach El Castillo by bus, but it is neither convenient nor user-friendly for visitors. Taxis are also available, but they are expensive and difficult to schedule.
We strongly recommend renting a car—more specifically a 4×4.
Outside San José, the landscape can be rugged and destinations are spread out. You can get to El Castillo in a regular car, but you’ll likely want to explore places that require a 4×4. This gives you the freedom to explore when and where you want.
