On the 3rd of December 2016, El Castillo, a boutique luxury hotel in Ojochal, Costa Rica, hosted their very First Annual Turtle Ball. This beautiful gala event served two purposes: 1) To entertain and delight guests with fine dining and entertainment, 2) and more importantly, to help save the turtles.
Reserva Playa Tortuga is a non-profit organization dedicated to saving our little reptilian friends. Formed by community members and Costa Rican scientists in 2009, they aim to contribute to biological research and conservation management. Every year, they work tirelessly to help protect these endangered turtles from poachers, educate locals about living in an environmentally sustainable manner, and help rehabilitate the land.

A total of 60 guests attended and for each ticket sold, $30 was donated to Reserva Playa Tortuga to help support their cause.
The evening consisted of delicious six-course dinner by Azul’s renowned Chef Pablo, live music by Costa Rica’s very own Cori Elle, and a live auction hosted by Daniel Behm (the owner of the hotel). The auction raised an additional $1700 for the cause. “It was wonderful to people from local Ojochal community gather together to support the Reserva in protecting our turtles,” said Behm.
Overall, it is safe to say the event was a success! The guests had a wonderful evening and a generous donation was giving to support an important cause. “It got me out of my shell,” one guest remarked humorously, “Slow and steady will finish the race!”
