Spend Time Exploring Corcovado National Park in Costa Rica

Those looking to trade in city noise for the sounds of nature should pack their bags and head to El Castillo Boutique Luxury Hotel. Perched high above the Pacific Ocean in Ojochal, this adults-only hotel is surrounded by breathtaking scenery that showcases the beauty of Costa Rica. Visitors will have no trouble finding ways to explore the outdoors thanks to adventures like wandering the rainforests and horseback riding. South of the hotel sits Corcovado National Park, a place every visitor to this region of Costa Rica should visit.

What to Know about Visiting the Park

Established in 1975, Corcovado National Park, or Parque Nacional Corcovado, is made up of five different areas: El Tigre, San Pedrillo, Sirena, La Leona, and Los Patos. Every sector is open daily from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., but Sirena is closed in October. There is a fee to enter the park.

There are two different stories about how the park got its name. One says people started referring to the park by Corcovado because of the shape of a rock found on the beach, which has a hump curvature shape. The second version says the name is in reference to the riverbed form, which makes different curves like a bucking horse.

Adventures to Enjoy inside the Park

Corcovado National Park in Costa Rica is home to countless animals, like the Baird’s Tapir.

Those who stay at El Castillo can book a hike through this 164-square-mile sanctuary starting from either the San Pedrillo or Sirena entrances. A seasoned guide will take the group through the jungle preserve, by the Sierpe River and mangroves filled with wildlife like howler monkeys, exotic birds, and the endangered Baird’s Tapir. Not only is this the largest national park in Costa Rica, but it also has three percent of the biodiversity found on this side of the planet, including 500 tree species.

Another popular activity to check out while in the park includes looking for bull sharks, dolphins, and crocodiles in the Sirena area.
